Merrimack, the largest of New England's three remaining coal-fired plants, will run through 2024 after cleaning up the region's grid
operator's latest forward capacity auction (FCA 14).
The Merrimack coal plant, which has an installed capacity of nearly 439 megawatts and was first commissioned in 1960, has been called for by activists to shut down, and the average capacity factor at its peak in 2018 was 14%.
Clean energy advocates had hoped that older fossil-fuel generators
could be retired early through government subsidies.
However, under ISO-NE's alternative auction (i.
e.
, competitive auction with a sponsor policy resource structure), there were no transactions
this year.
While the ISO-NE auction results do not indicate whether Merrimack is willing to retire through a competitive auction of sponsorship policy resources, the generators will receive an $8.
1 million compensation
during the 2023/2024 commitment period.
These payments will allow the facility to operate until 2024
