French cable manufacturer Nexans has received its first order under a framework agreement to manufacture about 110 kilometers of high-voltage submarine cables
for South Fork Wind, a joint venture between Danish new energy company Ørsted and Eversource.
According to the agreement, the three-phase 138 kV high-voltage AC submarine output cable required this time will be integrated with two fiber-optic cables and transmit 132 megawatts of power to Long Island
, New York.
The 132-megawatt South Fork wind farm, located 35 miles offshore of Montauk Point in New York, will meet East Hampton's energy needs, producing enough clean energy to power
70,000 homes each year.
This historic project will be New York State's first offshore wind farm and will play a key role
in achieving the state's clean energy goals.
Construction of the project will begin
in 2022.
Ørsted Wind Power North America and Nexans signed a framework agreement for export cables in December 2019, which provides an opportunity to supply 1,000 kilometers of high-voltage submarine cable to the United States by 2027, aiming to provide industry-leading submarine cable technology
to the United States by bringing Nexans.
The contract is the first project
delivered under this agreement.
According to reports, the submarine high-voltage AC cable will be produced at Nexans' newly remodeled Charleston, South Carolina submarine high-voltage plant, which is the only factory
in the United States that can produce high-voltage submarine cable.
It is a key part of
building a strategic supply chain for the U.
