OFS, a subsidiary of Furukawa Electric in Japan, is planning to expand production facilities
in Gwinnett and Carroll prefectures in Georgia, the United States, for $138.
9 million.
It is reported that the expansion of the two production facilities will create 200 local jobs, as the growing demand for bandwidth is bringing optimistic prospects
to OFS's core business, fiber optic cable.
OFS spokesman Sherry Salyer said the breakdown of work between the two facilities is "confidential," but the number of jobs in the state is "steadily growing"
due to global demand for fiber and cable.
According to OFS executives, the market demand for fiber-optic cables is growing
due to the proliferation of data centers, the prospect of 5G wireless networks, and the fact that more fiber is being installed into more homes, speeding up connections.
"Furukawa Electric is increasing its efforts
to respond to the increase in market demand.
We expect this demand to continue into the next decade, and communication traffic is expected to increase during this period," said
