As the world's most popular shoe, flip-flops make up a worrying proportion of waste plastic in landfills, coasts and oceans

The research is a collaboration between the University of California, San Diego and start-up company Algenesis Materials

In addition to designing the right formula for commercial-quality foam, the researchers worked with Algenesis to not only make the shoes, but also test them for degradation
.
By soaking the custom foam in conventional compost and soil for testing, the team found that the material degraded after just 16 weeks
.
Making the most of the recyclability of commercial products is the next step in scientists' ongoing mission to address the production and waste management issues we currently face using plastics, if not addressed, landfills or the natural environment by 2050.
13 billion tons of plastic will be produced

"The lifespan of a material should be proportional to the lifespan of the product," Mayfield said.

We don't need a material that takes 500 years or so to degrade if we only need a product that lasts a year or two
