    Sodium polystyrene sulfonate

    [Structural formula]

[Physical and chemical properties] Colorless transparent or yellow transparent viscous liquid, or white soft powder
    .

It is soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents

[Preparation method] Sodium polystyrene sulfonate is prepared by three methods: sodium styrene sulfonate monomer free radical solution polymerization, polystyrene sulfonation and poly(n-propyl-p-styrene sulfonic acid) hydrolysis
    .

The preparation process of the first two methods is as follows

    (1) Sodium styrene sulfonate monomer solution polymerization method

①The preparation of sodium styrene sulfonate uses 98% concentrated sulfuric acid as the sulfonating agent, Ag 2 SO 4 as the catalyst, and hydroquinone as the polymerization inhibitor
    .

Concentrated sulfuric acid: styrene (molar ratio) = 2:1, the mass fraction of catalyst is 1%, and the mass fraction of polymerization inhibitor is 1%

②Solution polymerization: Add a certain amount of deionized water to a polymerization reactor equipped with an electric stirrer, reflux condenser, and dropping funnel, and weigh a certain amount of sodium styrene sulfonate monomer to dissolve the deionized water in the reactor In water, slowly increase the reaction temperature to 85-90℃ under stirring, then add dropwise a metered ammonium persulfate aqueous solution prepared with deionized water, control the dropping rate, and make the reaction polymerize at about 90℃ for 3-4h, stop heating , Cooling to room temperature, that is, an aqueous solution of sodium polystyrene sulfonate with moderate molecular weight is prepared
    .

    (2) Polystyrene sulfonation method

First sulfonate polystyrene to make polystyrene sulfonic acid, then add alkali to neutralize, the reaction formula is as follows:

In an Erlenmeyer flask with a lid and magnetic stirring, add 40 mL of 100% sulfuric acid containing Ag2SO4 , and then quickly add polystyrene (Mw=239000) powder to it under strong stirring, and react for 15 minutes to form a transparent light yellow viscoussolution
    .

The reaction mixture is filtered and dialyzed to obtain a neutral liquid that does not contain Ag + and SO 4 2- line

[Application] Mainly used for boiler water, cooling water, urban sewage and mining wastewater treatment
    .

Used as a scale inhibitor and dispersant for boiler cooling water treatment system, it has a unique effect.
The sulfonic acid group on the macromolecular chain has a strong infiltration and dispersion effect, which can disperse larger dirt into tiny particles and suspend them in water
