The Bohai Qinhuangdao and Caofeidian Oilfield Group Shore Power Transformation Demonstration Project, with a transmission capacity of 200 MW and a voltage of 220 kV, is the first large-scale implementation of electric energy substitution in an offshore oil field in my country.

——Liu Wei, general manager of the shore power project team (Phase I) of Bohai Oilfield

According to the latest news from China National Offshore Oil Corporation (hereinafter referred to as CNOOC), my country's first offshore oilfield group shore power transformation demonstration project, completed the offshore installation of all electric power platforms on April 21, and will be put into use soon.

"Bohai Qinhuangdao and Caofeidian Oilfield Group Shore Power Transformation Demonstration Project, with a transmission capacity of 200 MW and a voltage of 220 kV.

Offshore oil fields use shore power for multiple purposes

For a long time, due to the limitations of technology and infrastructure, offshore oilfields have mainly used natural gas or crude oil associated with oilfield development as fuel for power generation for platform production and life.

For this reason, starting in 2019, CNOOC has carried out technical research on the national power grid, exploring the transmission of on-grid power to offshore oilfields through submarine high-voltage cables.

"The use of shore power in offshore oilfields can serve multiple purposes.

In addition, the shore power transformation has also eased the long-term dependence on imports of offshore platform generator sets, and can solve the problems of high maintenance costs and long cycles of imported generators.

Will cover 6 oilfield areas in Bohai Sea

Statistics show that after the introduction of shore power projects, the Qinhuangdao and Caofeidian oilfields have saved an average of about 64,700 tons of standard coal each year, which is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 170,000 tons, which is equivalent to planting 17 million trees.

It is reported that the shore power project team of the Bohai Oilfield is currently simultaneously advancing the laying of submarine cables and land cables, as well as the construction of land switch stations and joint marine and land commissioning.

According to CNOOC, according to the plan, the entire Bohai Oilfield shore power project will be implemented in three phases, covering 6 oilfield areas in the Bohai Sea.
