Spanish energy and petrochemical giant Repsol said on July 9 that it will invest 657 million euros in its Sines plant in Portugal to build two units to produce 300,000 tons/year of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and 300,000 tons/year polypropylene (PP)
.
Both installations are expected to start up in 2025
.
According to ICIS data, the feedstock for the two units will come from Repsol’s cracker at the site, which has a capacity of 410,000 tons/year of ethylene, 215,000 tons/year of propylene and 215,000 tons/year of butadiene.
50,000 tons/year
.
According to Repsol, if other petrochemicals are included, the facilities could produce 1 million tons per year
.
Sines is located on the Atlantic coast, 150km south of Lisbon; the company said it would develop "new logistics facilities", including new rail links, but gave no further details
.
The company said the Portuguese government had determined that Sines' investment was in the national interest and had given it tax incentives worth "up to 63 million euros"
.
Repsol operates the Sines Industrial Park, which also produces liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and lubricants
