Russian telecom operator Rostelecom has signed an agreement with the Murmansk regional government to build the operator's "first data center infrastructure"
within the Arctic Circle.
The planned facility on the Kola Peninsula, which will invest 300 million rubles ($4.
27 million), will come online in 2022, with construction due to begin
in late 2021 or early 2022.
The data center is built for use by government departments and regional enterprises
.
Rostelecom will also hire local staff, which operators will train to serve
in the hosting center.
Murmansk Governor Chibis said: "In the field of digitalization, we have achieved very important results
over the past two years.
First of all, the Murmansk region has become the second most digitized region
in the Northwest.
Second, we have become a major destination
for providing important digital social services.
”
"Data centers will help store and process information
.
The second very important point is that the center is necessary for our businesses, which are now very actively involved in reducing costs, improving labor efficiency and productivity
.
”
The Murmansk data center plan comes just weeks after Rostelecom opened another data center infrastructure in the capital, Moscow
.
