The proposed Bayu-Undan carbon capture and storage (CCS) project will enter the front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase, Australian energy giant Santos has announced

The Bayu-Undan CCS project has the potential to safely and permanently store up to 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, which is equivalent to about 1.
5% of Australia's annual carbon emissions
.
As such, it has the potential to be the largest CCS project in the world, and one of many key elements in helping the world meet its climate goals
The IEA's net-zero emissions plan predicts that CCUS will grow to 7.
6 GtCO2 per year by 2050, from around 40 Mtpa currently

The Bayu-Undan FEED will include engineering and design for additional CO2 processing capacity from Darwin LNG
.
In addition, it will include repurposing the Bayu-Undan facility for carbon sequestration operations after gas production ceases
Santos is working with Timor-Leste regulator ANPM to develop the necessary agreements and regulatory framework for the Bayu-Undan CCS project
.
The project also requires an agreement between the Timorese and Australian governments, as well as some regulatory arrangements in Australia
