Saudi Arabia, the main proponent of the decision, came under pressure
from the United States after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and non-OPEC producers (OPEC+) announced oil production cuts last week despite U.
S.
opposition.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the 13th, saying that it refuted those statements that "are not based on facts" accusing the country, and insisted that the decision to reduce production is in the interests of
both consumers and oil-producing countries.
"Saudi Arabia categorically rejects the US criticism", according to the Washington Post reported on the 13th, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Saudi government noted the remarks against Saudi Arabia made by all parties after the "OPEC+" decision to reduce production, describing Saudi Arabia's decision as "taking sides in international conflicts, out of political motives against the United States"
.
Saudi Arabia strongly opposed these "unfounded" statements, and the decision on production cuts was "based on purely economic considerations and unanimously agreed by all member states.
"
The statement also mentioned that the Saudi government had consulted with the US government on the oil market situation, and the US side suggested that the implementation of the production reduction plan be postponed for a month, but Saudi Arabia believed that doing so would have negative economic consequences
.
The Wall Street Journal quoted people familiar with the matter on the 11th as saying that for the US request to postpone production cuts, the Saudi side believes that the Biden administration is only worried that oil prices will continue to soar during the critical period before the mid-term congressional elections in the United States on November 8, which will greatly suppress the support of the Democratic Party, so it said a "resounding no"
to the United States.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry concluded its statement by stressing that Saudi Arabia views the U.
S.
-Saudi relationship as a strategic relationship in the common interests of the two countries, but opposes any "regulations, actions or attempts" that seek to distort Saudi Arabia's noble goal of "
protecting the global economy from fluctuations in the oil market.
"
The 33rd ministerial meeting of "OPEC+" held on the 5th of this month decided to significantly reduce production from November this year, which caused an uproar in the United States, and the two parties, especially the Democratic Party, called for "retaliation" and even "severed diplomatic relations"
with Saudi Arabia.
US President Biden said on the 11th that he would discuss with Congress how to deal with US-Saudi relations, and he did not disclose whether he would agree to suspend arms sales to Saudi Arabia, but stressed that Saudi Arabia's approach "will definitely have consequences"
.
