Sodium amide and its reactions

Sodium amide (NaNH ₂ ) is a super strong base with strong reactivity.

(1) Improper storage for a long time will greatly affect the activity, especially when the sodium amide turns yellow or brown, it means that peroxides have been formed and may explode

(2) When storing or using, pay attention to waterproofing and avoid direct contact with acids and oxidants, otherwise it may cause an explosion

(3) Sodium amide has a strong corrosive effect, so personal protection needs to be done when using it

(1) Avoid water and oxygen during sampling, feeding and reaction

(2) Although there is a commercial supply of sodium amide, it is best to prepare it and use it now, and do not store it for a long time

(3) Other alkali metal amides, such as lithium amide and potassium amide are also super bases, and their laboratory preparation methods, uses, hazardous characteristics and safety handling precautions are basically the same as those of sodium amide

Similar to sodium amide, large hindered sodium alkyl disilazide (such as sodium hexamethyldisilazide, NaHMDS) reagents and corresponding LiHMDS, KHMDS, lithium alkyl amide (such as lithium diisopropylamide , LDA), etc.
