Greek grid operator ADMIE launched two tenders on Friday to build two submarine cables
connecting Crete to the mainland, the Greek energy ministry said.

The ministry said the $1 billion project will be completed
    in 2022.

As part of a plan to connect the power grids of Cyprus, Israel and Greece, the project faces serious delays
    due to disagreements over ownership.

However, the Athenian side has been eager to start construction, saying it is key
    to Crete's energy supply.

In line with the EU's climate change targets, Crete now relies on three oil-fired power plants that will need to be reduced or stopped in the coming years
    .

ADMIE said the first tender will be to design and install two 500-megawatt submarine cables, setting a July 8 deadline
    for electronic submission of bids.

The second tender, for the construction of two converter stations and a substation, set a tender deadline
    of 22 July.
