On November 11, Bill Gates said in Beijing that his Terra Energy company would cooperate with CNNC to develop the fourth-generation nuclear energy technology, the traveling wave reactor, and is expected to establish a joint venture
.
The traveling wave reactor is a fourth-generation nuclear energy technology jointly developed by Terra Energy and CNNC, and the cooperation will contribute to
clean energy in China and globally.
Qian Zhimin, general manager of CNNC, said that Terra Energy and CNNC are working closely together to make breakthroughs in nuclear energy safety, depleted uranium utilization, nuclear non-proliferation control and the economics of nuclear energy.
It is reported that the exchanges between the Chinese and American governments and enterprises in the field of traveling wave reactor technology began in September
2009.
In February 2011, CNNC was entrusted by the National Energy Administration to start exchanges and explore cooperation
with Terra Energy of the United States.
In December 2013, the U.
S.
and Chinese governments signed a document on the implementation arrangement of traveling wave reactor technology under the Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement, which came into effect
in April 2014.
Since July 2014, CNNC and Terra Energy, as respective authorized enterprises in China and the United States, have carried out substantive exchanges and cooperation
on joint technical assessments.
On September 22, 2015, local time in the United States, at the Sino-US cooperation seminar held in Seattle, CNNC and Terra Energy signed a cooperation document
on the traveling wave reactor.
