According to reports, the project was launched in April 2017, and the first phase of construction began in July 2017, including fiber optic lines
from Mapanga to Chiradzulu and Zomba to Liwonde.
The $23 million Malawi National Fibre Optic Backbone Project aims to integrate government-run systems and increase internet access, particularly in rural areas

The project was deployed by equipment supplier Huawei through transmission lines owned by the Malawi Electricity Supply Company (ESCOM
).
In November 2016, the Chinese government agreed to provide Malawi with a US$21.
