According to European grid builders Empower AS and Leonhard Weiss Energy AS, the construction
of a third power cable connecting Estonia and Latvia has begun.
This grid interconnection project is an important prerequisite for
the synchronization of the power systems of the Baltic States with those of continental Europe.
The construction of the project will also create a better infrastructure
for the integration of renewable energy into the grid in western Estonia.
According to Estonian grid operator Elering, the power cable is about 175 kilometers long and costs 60 million euros
.
Eelite said it would fund
the power cable project through auctions of cross-border power transmission capacity and EU funds.
