Portugal-based packaging manufacturer Interplás, in partnership with France's Yoplait, launched a pilot project in 2020 that successfully demonstrated the feasibility of using rPS in dairy packaging
.
As a result, the company will now incorporate recycled materials into its dairy packaging on an industrial scale
.
The project aims to increase the carbon neutrality of the value chain through the use of recyclable materials
.
The project material is derived from post-consumer mixed plastic waste, converted by Total in an ISCC-certified steam cracker in Antwerp
.
The resulting PS is a certified chemically recycled PS that provides virgin-like performance and is suitable for food-grade packaging
.
Intraplás is strongly committed to achieving full circularity in its packaging
.
The company is also ISCC Plus certified for use in all types of recycled polymers, including biorecycled polymers
.
Intraplás said that by showing that chemical recycling can provide an efficient route to PS recycling and close the loop in dairy applications, the project opens the door to alternatives that can help reduce the use of fossil raw materials, thus actively promoting the transition to a circular economy
.
The company added that the transition from pilot to industrial scale does not require substantial changes to any production process, nor does it affect the technical and functional characteristics of the product
.
