As part of its sustainable development plan, British soft drink producer Britvic has signed a purchase agreement with Esterform Packaging to use recycled plastic (rPET) supplied by the other party on a long-term basis

    .

The soft drink producer and distributor will invest £5 million to support Esterform's new rPET manufacturing facility in North Yorkshire, England

    .

Under the terms of the agreement, Esterform will be Britvic's preferred supplier of rPET in the UK and Ireland

    .

As part of its sustainable packaging strategy, Britvic is committed to reducing the use of virgin PET and increasing the use of rPET to help drive a more efficient circular economy

    .

According to Britvic, there is currently not enough food-grade rPET capacity in the UK

    .

Esterforms' new facility will be produced using 100% renewable energy and is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2020

    .

Trystan Farnworth, Britvic's Director of Sustainability, said: "We are committed to making a positive difference to the world and our partnership with Esterform is a further development of our business and a step towards reducing waste plastic pollution

    .

"When domestic renewable resources are scarce, Esterform Packaging provides us with sufficient rPET material supply.
Compared with importing recycled materials in foreign countries, local material supply can undoubtedly significantly reduce our carbon footprint

    .

Britvic is a founding member of the UK Plastics Pact, a collaborative project led by WRAP and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to create a circular economy for plastics, ensuring Plastic does not enter the environment
    .
Since 2017, all PET bottles, glass bottles and cans used by Britvic are recyclable
