Plastic packaging specialist Alpla and the KHS Group have teamed up to develop a new bottle that meets the requirement to add 30% recycled content to single-use PET bottles
.
The 1.
0-liter PET bottle developed by KHS and Alpla contains 35% regrind and is fully recyclable
.
The KHS Group produces packaging and filling systems for the beverage and liquid food industries and is considered a technology leader in returnable container systems
.
Compared to conventional recyclable PET containers on the market, the design of the new bottle is very light, which is achieved by optimizing the bottom and neck of the bottle
.
"This optimisation means that much less material is used
.
PET bottles have good corrosion resistance, which means their quality and appearance are maintained even after numerous washes, making them suitable for applications with high cycle rates
.
KHS Group has started testing options with higher percentages of recycled material
.
"Our test results were excellent, with preforms made from up to 35 percent recycled material; for some brands, preforms with 50 percent recycled material are also feasible
.
The optimised preforms can be blow moulded on all KHS stretch blow moulding machines suitable for returnable containers, including the InnoPET Blomax range, a system suitable for all types of beverages in the returnable container sector
.
“We believe that we can quickly and successfully bring environmentally friendly PET bottles to market
,” Wiese said.
“Our goal is to work closely with bottling companies to activate the market
.
