The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said in a statement on Monday that the Unit 1 reactor at the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates had reached 100 percent
of its power during testing.
Located in the Al Dhafrah area of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, the Barakah nuclear power plant is the first nuclear power plant in the Arab region and part of
Gulf oil producers' efforts to diversify their energy mix.
The plant is expected to begin commercial operations
in early 2021, the statement said.
ENEC said: "The No.
1 assembly machine has a capacity of 1400 megawatts
.
This milestone makes Unit 1 the largest single source
of electricity in the UAE.
”
It is reported that the Barakah nuclear power plant, built by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), will have four reactors with a total capacity of 5,600 MW
when fully completed.
At present, the construction of Unit 3 is 93% complete, the construction of Unit 4 is 87% complete, and the construction of Unit 2 is completed and is waiting for the permission to connect to the
grid.
In November, Nawah, a joint nuclear operations and maintenance subsidiary of UAE Nuclear Energy and Korea Electric Power Corporation, announced that the reactor at Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant had reached 80 percent power operation
.
This is an important step in the ongoing Unit 1 Power Boost Test (PAT), which involves slowly increasing reactor power levels
while collecting data and adjusting control and safety systems.
The implementation of PAT is carried out
under the supervision of the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority (FANR), the UAE's independent nuclear regulator.
Since the Barakah nuclear power plant was built, the agency has carried out more than 280 inspections
.
