Researchers from Ikerbasque and UPV/EHU, in collaboration with the Biodonostia and Biocruces Institute and Txagorritxu and Galdakao hospitals, have developed a non-invasive method that uses saliva to help diagnose celiac disease

This is the procedure they followed: First, they confirmed that the inflammation seen in the intestines of patients with celiac disease can be detected in saliva

The study’s lead researcher Ainara Castellanos and pre-doctoral fellow Maialen Sebastian believe that the method they developed is “very useful for screening patients with suspected celiac disease before endoscopy

They also showed that the same saliva samples can also be used to detect the genetic risk of diseases.
