    A few days ago, the medical physics research team of Wuhan University and the University of Science and Technology of China used the acoustic signals emitted during proton therapy to achieve online monitoring of three-dimensional doses, which is expected to be used in proton flash therapy (FLASH)


    According to Peng Hao, the project leader and a professor at the School of Physical Science and Technology of Wuhan University, compared with traditional radiotherapy, proton therapy has an obvious advantage that the characteristic of "Bragg Peak" allows most of the energy to be deposited in the tumor target area and reduces Damage to normal tissues


    To solve this difficulty, the researchers adopted an innovative solution: install sensors on the patient to track the acoustic signal generated by the thermal expansion of the tissue (generated by energy deposition) during the treatment process, and get the dose deposition in the body


    Peng Hao also mentioned that although the principle of short-pulse high-energy particle beams producing acoustic signals was first discovered in the 1980s, the challenges that have always been faced are small signal amplitude and low signal-to-noise ratio
