Allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (

) was first described in 1989, with variations arising over the next few years such as allele-specific oligonucleotide PCR, mutant-allele-specific amplification (MASA), PCR amplification of specific alleles (PASA), and the amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) (
