Antibiotic exposure of Shanghai children has dropped significantly in recent years
Antibiotic exposure of Shanghai children has dropped significantly in recent years.

Supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and international regional cooperation and exchange projects , Wang Hexing and the professor’s scientific research team have cooperated with Shanghai’s disease prevention and control and other related units, and Chen Yue of the University of Ottawa School of Medicine in Canada .

To this end, starting from 2017, the research team of Wang Hexing and Jiang Qingwu has established a health dynamic cohort of about 300 children aged 7 to 11 based on the elementary school in Changning District, Shanghai.
Follow-up until 2020, a total of 684 children will participate in the cohort
    .

Every year, questionnaire surveys, physical examinations and urine collection are conducted to detect 26 kinds of antibiotics and metabolites in the five categories of urine

The results of the follow-up study of the child health dynamic cohort found that the detection rate of antibiotics in the urine was 51.
    9%
    .

Compared with 2017, the total detection rate of antibiotics in urine in 2020 will drop from 58.

Jiang Qingwu said that in order to study the reasons for the decline in antibiotic exposure, the scientific research team incorporated basic population characteristics such as physical activity, weight, and food intake that affect antibiotic exposure into the statistical model, and found that it did not significantly affect the decline in antibiotic exposure
    .

In order to further study the influence of food intake and analysis methods, the scientific research team included typical phthalate metabolites and bisphenol A in urine with similar exposure sources to antibiotics as co-exposure reference pollutants and included them in the statistical model.

Wang Hexing said that from 2017 to 2020, although children in Shanghai were still exposed to antibiotics extensively, it has shown a significant downward trend, indicating that the policies that China has implemented in recent years to promote the rational use of antibiotics have shown effectiveness
    .

As there may be differences in the implementation of policies between regions in China, the findings in Shanghai’s children may not be applicable to other regions.
