It is well known that stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and both large atherosclerosis and small vessel occlusion may lead to acute ischemic stroke (AIS)

Studies have demonstrated an association between CSVDs and cerebrovascular events in patients with large atherosclerotic stenosis

Recently, a study published in the journal European Radiology explored the relationship between the characteristics of carotid vulnerable plaques coexisting with CSVDs and the risk of AIS, and further determined whether coexisting diseases were more closely related to AIS than single disease.

This study enrolled patients with both cerebrovascular symptoms and carotid plaques

Of the 634 patients recruited (mean age: 59.

This study found that carotid vulnerable plaque and cerebral small vessel disease had a stronger association with acute ischemic stroke than carotid disease alone
