BD has announced a major improvement in flow cytometry in collaboration with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Cell sorting by flow cytometry is a well-known technique that allows one to identify and sort individual cells based on their specific characteristics, allowing them to study them more deeply and assess each cell's contribution to new drugs.

BD's new technology, called BD CellView™ imaging technology, is capable of capturing multiple images of a single cell flowing through the system at a rate of 15,000 cells per second

With the addition of image analysis capabilities, the new technology can identify not only whether a biomarker is present in a cell, and how much, but also where it is located or how it is distributed within the cell

In this newly published study, researchers used BD CellView™ imaging technology to investigate regulators of the NF-κB pathway

Using BD CellView™ imaging technology, they were able to identify several novel regulators of this important signaling pathway in hours, rather than days as traditional methods take

    Co-corresponding author Lars Steinmetz, Ph.

Tom Polen, CEO of BD, said: "This breakthrough is basically the equivalent of researchers identifying specific characteristics of cells of interest under a microscope and sorting each cell based on their observations - only at a rate of every minute.

The new technology fills a long-standing gap in biomedical research, allowing scientists to more rapidly observe and isolate cells with specific characteristics, accelerating discovery research and uncovering potential treatments in areas such as oncology and virology
