, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Blue light from light-emitting diodes may damage brain cells and retina and speed up the aging process, according to a new study published in the journal Aging and Disease Pathology by the British Nature Publishing Group.
Researchers at Oregon State University and warsaw University in Poland grouped fruit flies, one group receiving blue light from light-emitting diodes 12 hours a day, and the other in the dark or filtering out blue light.
results showed that fruit flies exposed to blue light daily experienced damage to retinal and brain nerve cells, as well as impaired motor ability. Fruit flies exposed to filtered blue light have a slightly shorter life span, while fruit flies exposed only to blue light have a significantly shorter life span.
it is worth noting that some fruit flies in this experiment had no eyes due to mutations. But even after being exposed to blue light, the eyeless fruit fly suffers from impaired brain and motor skills, suggesting that even if the fruit fly can't see the light, it can be affected by it.
and medical advances could reduce the adverse effects of blue light on the human body, according to researchers. For example, we can wear amber lenses and other methods to filter out the blue light emitted by the screen of electronic devices such as mobile phones or tablets, or we can improve the screen of electronic devices to reduce the production of blue light.
