the widespread use of BPAS (BPS) in thermal paper has raised concerns because BPS is suspected of affecting human reproduction and hormone systems. "Replacing a hazardous substance with a substance that is also considered dangerous is not what regulators or EU citizens want to see. Our Scientific Committee said in 2015 that restrictions on BPA in thermal paper could reduce risk only if the industry chose alternatives to BPS. We need to better understand BPS and other BPA. To that end, regulatory measures are being taken. Peter van der Zandt, Director of Risk Management at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), said.
Belgian authorities are currently assessing whether the use of BPS poses a threat to human health or the environment and a conclusion is expected by 2021. In addition, Belgium has submitted a proposal in 2019 to assess the classification and labelling of reproductive toxicity of the substance. The ECHA Risk Assessment Committee is expected to comment on the proposal in spring 2021. In addition, ECHA is currently treating BPA as a whole rather than as a single substance to gather information on a more comprehensive regulatory strategy for these chemicals.
