The researchers selected 161,000 participants between the ages of 40 and 79 from the NHS with no history of atrial fibrillation or heart failureDuring the participants' routine physical examination, the researchers collected information about their height, weight, illness, lifestyle, oral health and oral hygiene behaviorDuring the 10.5-year median follow-up period, 4,911 (3.0%) developed atrial fibrillation and 7,971 (4.9%) developed heart failureData analysis showed that people who brushed their teeth three or more times a day had a 10 percent lower risk of atrial fibrillation and a 12 percent lower risk of heart failureThis probability is not affected by common diseases such as age, gender, socio-economic status, exercise, alcohol consumption, body mass index and hypertensionThe findings were published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiologyresearchers say poor oral hygiene can cause bacteria to grow in the blood, causing inflammation in the body, increasing the risk of atrial fibrillation and heart failureBrushing regularly reduces bacteria in the biofilm below the gums, preventing them from transferring to the bloodstream.
