The American lobster is a crustacean that lives on the ocean floor and can live up to 100 years old in the wild

Jose Lopez, a molecular evolutionary biologist at Nova Southeastern University who was not involved in the study, said that lobsters are "very different from us", "but humans do have many homologous genes with these seemingly very distant animals

As the years go by, American lobster seems to get better

In order to find out whether the genes of American lobsters contain the secret of their longevity, in 2015, researchers at the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) launched the American Lobster Whole Genome Sequencing Project

Two GMGI researchers-biochemist Andrea Bodnar and marine biologist Jennifer Polinski promoted the use of new sequencing technology for additional sequencing, but restarted the entire analysis

A few days ago, researchers reported that by 2019, GMGI's work has produced the most complete lobster genome to date, and it is estimated that 72% of the entire sequence has been captured

For example, researchers have discovered that genes encoding a variety of proteins help regulate the movement of ions through cell membranes (ligand-gated ion channels), and even discovered a new channel type

The researchers were surprised to find that compared with mammals and fruit flies, lobsters have almost no genes that activate programmed cell death

Bodnar said more research can help explain how lobsters are almost tumor-free and how these experiences can one day be used by humans

"Human life has been very long

Polinski emphasized the more direct application of the lobster genome
