Cellular respiration of the inner mitochondrial membrane

Mitochondria are the energy factories of cells, burning metabolites with the help of oxygen, making a huge contribution to the body's energy supply
    .

This cellular respiration occurs inside the two mitochondrial membranes, which are strongly folded compared to the outer membrane

    Communication is the key

Two inner mitochondrial membrane protein complexes required for normal membrane structure are F1Fo-ATP synthase (an enzyme also involved in energy conversion) and the MICOS complex (mitochondrial contact site and cristae organization system)
    .

These complexes are seen as antagonists; they are located in different regions of the inner membrane and bend the membrane in opposite directions

Heike Rampelt, Nikolaus Pfanner and Claudine Kraft lead research teams at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Medicine and conduct research in the field of biosignal research at the CIBSS Cluster of Excellence at the University of Freiburg
