    Costa Rica lifts tariffs on Canadian cane sugar and maintains 45%

    The Costa Rican government recently announced that it would cancel the trade protection measures imposed on Canada's cane sugar exports in August 2020 and lower the tariff rate from 72.

    Costa Rica’s “Nation” reported on July 20 that, based on the free trade agreement signed between Costa Rica and Canada, Canada annually exports 4,000 tons of non-originating (from a third country) purified cane sugar to Costa Rica
    .
    In order to protect the development of the country's cane sugar industry, the Costa Rican Sugarcane Agro-Industry Alliance (Laica) filed a complaint with the government.
    The Costa Rican government also decided in August 2020 to increase the tariff rate on Canadian cane sugar from 45% to 72.
