▎The content team editor of WuXi AppTec recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated its COVID-19 patient care guidelines to include interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor inhibitors
.
The results of a prospective and meta-study initiated by the WHO show that it can save the lives of patients with severe or critical COVID-19, especially when used with corticosteroids
.
This analysis included 27 clinical trials with more than 10,000 patients enrolled, making it the largest analysis of such drugs to date
.
The WHO press release stated that this is the first drug found to be effective against COVID-19 since the organization recommended corticosteroids in September 2020
.
WuXi AppTec's content team maps severe or critical COVID-19 patients who often have an overreaction of the immune system, which is very harmful to the patient's health
.
IL-6 inhibitors (such as tocilizumab and sarilumab) can suppress this overreaction
.
This data analysis shows that compared with standard treatment, the use of these drugs can reduce the chance of death by 13% in severe or critically ill patients
.
For critically ill patients, the number of deaths per 1,000 patients can be reduced by as much as 28
.
In addition, compared with standard treatment, severe and critically ill patients treated with IL-6 receptor inhibitors are 28% less likely to require mechanical ventilation
.
Clinical trial investigators in 28 countries shared data with WHO (including pre-publication data)
.
Researchers around the world have compiled and analyzed the data
.
The World Health Organization stated in a press release that with the support of these key partners, it will be able to quickly issue this trusted recommendation
.
