Crab-eating monkeys suffer from Parkinson's disease

Recently, researchers at the Kunming Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences screened large groups of experimental monkeys in captivity and focused on comparing 60 crab-eating monkeys with rhesus monkeys, and found that one of the 10-year-old male crab-eating monkeys spontaneously showed typical and severe symptoms of Parkinson's disease, the first international case of spontaneous Parkinson's disease observed in animals other than humans. The findings were published in the National Science Review on December 10.

"After sequencing 11 known risk genes for Parkinson's disease, we found that the 10-year-old crab-eating monkey carried a mutation in the Parkinson's disease risk gene, and functional experiments confirmed that the mutation had a clear biological function and may have been involved in the disease process," Li Hao, Ph.D., of Kunming Animal Institute, the paper's lead author, told China Science Daily. team tested three studies of typical clinical symptoms, pharmacological responses and pathological characteristics of Parkinson's disease to confirm that it was a crab-eating monkey that spontaneously developed Parkinson's disease.
the study showed that monkeys, in addition to humans, also spontaneously develop Parkinson's disease, with esopaedic and pathogenesis similar to among human patients. The study also proves that the mechanism of Parkinson's disease occurred before humans, and that the use of monkeys to model Parkinson's disease has a solid biological basis.
