Unfortunately, to date, most ultra-hydrophobic surfaces have been produced using fluoride or carbon/inoromic nanoparticles, which are known to have adverse effects on human health and the environment. Therefore, a new work proposes an easy way to develop new sustainable super-hydrophobic coatings to produce self-cleaning and healing fabrics.

the coating was developed using cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as raw materials. When applied to a variety of fabrics (cotton and polyester), they become ultra-hydrophobic, with a WCA of 152-156 degrees (±3), so most droplets roll like balls on the surface to form a self-cleaning fabric. Furthermore, coated fabrics can quickly restore self-healing properties when heated.
