A new study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research suggests that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used to reduce pain may hinder the beneficial effects of bisphosphonate bone-protecting drugs

In a study of 5212 women over the age of 75, NSAID use did not appear to have a direct impact on the individual's fracture risk, but the drug seemed to negate the effect of oral bisphosphonates, clodronate, in preventing osteoporosis.

"We need to exercise some caution in extrapolating these data to the more widespread use of phosphates for osteoporosis, but given the prevalence of concomitant NSAIDs and phosphate use, this may have major clinical consequences, leading to failure to reduce fractures Risks what we hoped," said senior author Eugene McCloskey, MD, of the UK's Northern General Hospital
