However, the actual fluorescence mechanism of Cdots remains unclear, a problem that has plagued researchers and limited the development of Cdots to a certain extent

Recently, Dong Wenfei's team from Suzhou Institute of Medical Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences studied the molecular structure and luminescence behavior of carbon dots in detail through purification and separation, and proposed the luminescence mechanism and formation mechanism of carbon dots

In the present study, the authors isolated o-phenylenediamine carbon dots ( o-pd CDs ) by column chromatography and confirmed two precise molecular fluorophore structures, 2 , 3 -diaminophenazine ( DAP ) and 2 -Amino- 3 -hydroxyphenazine ( AHP )

Therefore, the authors believe that Cdots are formed from DAP , and the formation process is as follows: DAP initially aggregates into polymer clusters, and then gradually carbonizes with time

The latest research results are published in a paper entitled " Formation mechanism of carbon dots: From chemical structures to fluorescent behaviors " in the top international journal Carbon in the field of carbon materials .
