(Xinhua) -- A jury in Ohio recently awarded DuPont $2 million in damages to plaintiff Kenneth Vigneron in the first of about 40 environmental poisoning cases allr that accused DuPont of releasing toxic substances into the air and drinking water sources on the Ohio River, sickening people in the surrounding area.
plaintiff, Kenneth Vigneron, accused DuPont of causing testicular cancer by polluting the environment. Vigneron's lawsuit is part of a multiparty lawsuit involving about 3,500 people who claim that DuPont released perfluoroic acid, also known as PFOA or C8, into the surrounding environment of the Ohio River at its Washington plant site for decades.
according to the plaintiffs, DuPont's internal research has long shown that C8 is a dangerous hazard, but for decades the company has used C8 as the basic part of making the well-known non-stick pot cooker paint. Now, the substance has been phased out in most U.S. manufacturing.
in six other lawsuits in 2016, two have already been decided by juries that DuPont should be punished, for $1.6 million and $5.6 million, respectively, including punitive damages. DuPont is appealing both rulings.
While DuPont has been fighting allegations that it dumped toxic substances to cause disease hazards, some residents of Ohio and West Virginia insist they have suffered health problems as a result of exposure to the chemicals.
addition, a Dutch investigation revealed that drinking water near the DuPont plant in Dodrecht, the Netherlands, was contaminated with C8 and that DuPont had "exposed people living near the plant to toxic substances for 25 years".
Earlier in 2016, the judge in the case ordered DuPont to hand over documents related to the Dutch investigation to U.S. plaintiffs, saying that information about the company's conduct in similar circumstances could help establish punitive damages or counter the company's position that it "has taken positive steps toward the safety of C8."
of punitive damages in the Vigneron case will begin in 2017.
