Original title: Eat walnuts every day to prevent heart disease and bowel cancer
A new U.S. study has found that eating a small amount of walnuts a day can prevent heart disease and bowel cancer.
the study was led by Professor Anna Horschel of the University of Illinois. The researchers asked 18 healthy adults to eat 0 grams or 42 grams of walnuts per day (the FDA's recommended intake for coronary artery disease) for a period of six weeks every three weeks. In addition to walnuts, the participants' diet lists were consistent. Before and after the trial, the researchers took blood and excreta samples from participants, which were used to measure cholesterol, blood sugar and inflammatory levels, and excreta samples to determine the composition of gut bacteria. It was found that eating walnuts every day for six weeks in a row can significantly reduce bile acid production and lower bad cholesterol levels. Excess bile acid can lead to bowel cancer, and low levels of bad cholesterol can reduce the risk of heart disease.
researchers believe that the high fiber contained in walnuts promotes the growth of good bacteria in the gut, and although walnuts are relatively high in calories (about 0.12 kjoules per walnut), only 80 percent are absorbed and the good bacteria in the gut consume the remaining 20 percent. In addition, people who ate a small amount of walnuts a day produced less secondary bile acid. Unlike primary bile acids produced in the liver, secondary bile acids are produced in the intestines. In individuals with a higher incidence of colon cancer, secondary bile acid is generally more common.
new study also found that walnuts can increase levels of three types of bacteria in the gut: Joonn Difficile, Ross and Thyrobacteria. In animal experiments, these bacteria can reduce inflammation, and more and more people have seen it as a potential probiotic. (Chen Xin Jialing)
