After the European Union banned the synthetic antioxidant ethoxyquinoline (Ethoxyquin), more and more countries around the world have begun to upgrade their standards, including China
    .

James Frank, managing director of Peruvian fishmeal exporter MSICeres, said at the IFFO workshop on November 29 that some other countries are phasing out ethoxyquinoline
    after the European Union.
"More and more countries are no longer accepting quinoline-treated fishmeal, BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) are alternative options for antioxidants, and fishmeal used in shrimp feed is essentially BHT treated
from the Peruvian local market to the export market.
    "

"Currently, Peru's fishmeal exports to Europe, Canada, the United States and Australia are now 100% quinoline-free
    .
Companies in other European countries, such as the UK and Norway, have also stopped using quinoline
    .
Many countries are using BHT and BHA as alternatives, and Vietnam is increasingly demanding BHT fishmeal, and soon we will see China follow suit

In August, the European Commission passed Regulation 2022/1375 to stop the reauthorization of ethoxyquinoline in all animal species and categories, which means that aquaculture products imported from China and other third parties in the EU are also not allowed to feed with ethoxyquinoline
    .

Frank said that Chinese importers have to make a decision, and they are gradually starting to buy BHT-treated fishmeal from Peru, this time for directed sales to other countries
    .
There are other natural antioxidant alternatives, such as rosemary extract, but they are rejected by Chinese importers because they are too expensive, less effective, and too difficult to handle
    .

According to IFFO, natural antioxidants are widely used in European countries and are also becoming more popular in North America, so their production capacity is also expanding
    .
If the price of natural antioxidants continues to fall, the Chinese market may also accept it
    .

Frank said the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has also adjusted its maritime standards for natural antioxidants, but has not lowered the concentration requirements
for a batch of synthetic antioxidants such as ethoxyquinoline.

"For long-haul shipments from the Americas to China, if there are no transshipments, congestion, overturns, cancellations, etc.
, the IMO requires that the minimum concentration of quinoline and BHT be maintained at 150 ppm
    .
So in theory, this also makes natural antioxidants more attractive, because less is required and the cost is lower
