Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released detailed data on 72 seafood refusals in December, 2.
8% of which were shrimp products for containing banned antibiotics
.
In addition, FDA also issued unreported seafood import refusals in November, including three shrimp products
rejected due to drug residues.

Throughout 2022, the FDA rejected the import
of 60 shrimp products containing banned antibiotics.
Although the number is less than the total for the same period in 2021, it is also the third highest
in six years.

About half (or 15) of the 2022 antibiotic-related import refusals (29) came from India
.
In last year's data on shrimp product refusals, 11 were rejected for antibiotics, 11 from Thailand, 10 from Bangladesh, 3 from Vietnam, 3 from Hong Kong, 2 from Malaysia, 1 from Mexico and 1 from China
.

Of the five shrimp imports rejected in November and December, two came from Indian exporters:

· Albys Agro Pvt.
Ltd.
(India), whose shrimp shipments have been listed on Import Alert 16-129 ("Seafood Products Held Without Physical Inspection Due to Nitrofuran") since June 3, 2022, one of which was rejected by Southwest Customs on December 20, 2022 due to drug residues

· Falcon Marine Exports Ltd.
(India), which is not currently listed on
Import Alert 16-124 ("Detention of seafood products without physical inspection due to unapproved drugs"), Import Alert 16-127 ("Crustaceans detained without physical inspection due to chloramphenicol") or Import Alert 16-129 ("Detention of seafood products without physical inspection due to nitrofuran").
