Original title: High incidence of heart disease in fast food restaurants
Recently, researchers at the University of Newcastle, Australia, presented a study at the 67th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Heart Association: In areas with more fast food restaurants, heart disease is high.
researchers analyzed the relationship between fast food restaurant density and heart disease rates. The results showed that for every additional fast food outlet, there were four additional heart attacks per 100,000 people a year. After adjusting for factors such as age, weight, high blood lipids, high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes, these findings were consistent in rural and urban areas of New South Wales. The findings highlight the importance of the food environment for health, and the link between the high number of fast food restaurants and poor health should draw the attention of government health departments to the management of cardiovascular diseases and address this issue in a targeted way in future public health promotion strategies and legislation. In addition to regulating the location and density of fast food outlets, residential areas should be equipped with supermarkets and convenience stores that facilitate the purchase of healthy food.
