Coventfish has not been studied much before, and instead of catching them, researchers used underwater photography to observe coventfish that live around the world. The camera was mounted on a remote-controlled vehicle for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expedition.
videos taken at various locations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans showed no signs of exhalation or inhalation after the coventfish pumped large amounts of water into their mouths. After a few minutes, their bodies shrink like degassing. Scientists report in the Journal of Fish Biology that this is because coventfish have huge chambers, so they can store large amounts of water for a certain period of time.
why are they like this? The researchers point out that coventfish are notoriously lazy, so the herring may save some energy. On the other hand, swelling the body is also a warning to potential predators.
