Foodborne illness in humans is often associated with eating meat (such as pork and chicken) or meat products that have been infected with Campylobacter, Salmonella or (monospora) Listeria
.
In 2015, EU member states recorded 229,000 cases of campylobacteriosis, making it the most reported zoonotic disease in the EU
.
In order to assess the food-related microbial risk of the disease and to identify the main routes of transmission, it is necessary to look at all stages of the food chain in line with the "farm to fork" principle
.
Surveys along the entire food chain using zoonotic disease surveillance and other control programmes implemented by relevant authorities require modern means (eg, next-generation sequencing) to detect and type food-borne pathogens
.
Finally, consistent and standardized data must be available for microbial risk assessment, the application of modeling software tools, and the development of various risk management measures to improve food safety and protect consumers more effectively
.
