Fossil research confirms new Australian dinosaur species |
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, June 14-An international scientific research team recently reported that the giant dinosaur fossils previously discovered in Australia came from a new species of dinosaur, which is also the largest dinosaur discovered on land in Australia so far
.
Related papers were recently published in the American Journal of Peer Review Science
The paper speculates that when this dinosaur stands alive, the hip height is about 5 to 6.
5 meters, and the length from the snout to the end of the tail can reach 25 to 30 meters
.
The skeletal fossil of this giant dinosaur was first discovered in 2004 in Eromanga, a town in southwestern Queensland
.
Since the discovery was located near Cooper Creek, researchers gave it the nickname "Cooper Dragon" at the time, and continued to analyze and study the fossil fragments of "Cooper Dragon" for more than 10 years
Scott Hawkner, the first author of the paper and a researcher at the Queensland Museum, said: "In order to confirm that the'Coopersaurus' is a new species, we need to compare its bones with those of other dinosaurs found in Queensland and around the world.
Comparison
.
This is an extremely long and arduous task
Researchers used three-dimensional scanning technology to digitally scan each bone and compared it with other dinosaur bones.
Hawkner said that this dinosaur belongs to the same "family" as the three larger dinosaurs previously discovered in Australia-"Winton", "Diamantina" and "Steppeosaurus".
