Patient-led monitoring is a promising new model of follow-up care after partial melanoma resection

The purpose is to determine whether patient-led monitoring of patients with local primary skin melanoma is as safe, feasible and acceptable as clinician-led monitoring
.
The use of smartphones for melanoma patients to submit lesion images to their specialists seems to be a safe and convenient form of follow-up after treatment
.
On November 24th, the study titled "Assessing the Potential for Patient-led Surveillance After Treatment of Localized Melanoma (MEL-SELF) A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial" was published on "JAMA Dermatology"
.
Researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney evaluated data on 100 patients who used mobile phones, had a partner to help perform skin self-examinations, and participated in regular follow-ups with their doctors between 2018 and 2020
.
Professor Monika Janda from the University of Queensland Health Service Research Center said that in a randomized preliminary study, the patient-led surveillance team detected 5 new cases of melanoma before clinical visits
.
Professor Janda said: "This shows that the method used can effectively assist the group in identifying lesions, while the standard care group did not identify any new melanomas
.
""Three participants in each group found new melanomas during routine follow-up
.
"The trial also showed that patient reports improved participants' self-examination knowledge and practice, and led to better psychological results
.
"The research is part of the University of Sydney's MELSELF project, which is studying how smartphone technology can help detect melanoma earlier than usual routine follow-up
.
Associate Professor Katy Bell from the University of Sydney School of Public Health said patient-led surveillance It is a new model of follow-up care that allows melanoma patients to submit images of skin lesions using attachments on their smartphones for quick review by dermatologists
.
"We are currently conducting larger trials of the same intervention to produce clear The evidence to prove whether patient-led surveillance can detect new melanomas more quickly
.
"About 1,700 Australians die each year from melanoma, and another 500 die from other types of skin cancer
.
Professor Janda said that if a person is trained to systematically self-examine their skin, it can be obtained through patient-led monitoring.
With timely review, many melanomas can be self-detected
.
He said: “Routine in-person visits to the clinic are resource-intensive.
Compared with patient-led surveillance, tests have never been done before
.
"If confirmed in larger studies, this new model of patient care can reduce the number of clinical visits and the burden on the health care system, and make it easier for people, especially those who live far away from treatment centers
.
