Japan imported 19,267 tonnes of mackerel in November 2020, down 22.6% from a year earlier, according to trade statistics from the Ministry of Finance.
Imports of U.S. mackerel were 9,192 tons, down 24 percent year-on-year, while U.S. fish production continued to decline, by 20 to 30 percent, leading to a decline in Japanese imports from the U.S.
Japan's imports of mackerel from Southeast Asian countries were also mixed, with imports from Thailand up 2.4 per cent to 2,147 tonnes, imports from China increasing significantly by more than seven times to 1,829 tonnes, and imports from India, Pakistan and Myanmar There was also an increase, while imports from Viet Nam decreased by 6.8 per cent to 1,493 tons, while imports from India decreased by 31.7 per cent to 3,387 tons and imports from Malaysia by 10.1 per cent to 330 tons.
11 months of last year, Japan imported 173,556 tons of mackerel, down 20.8% year-on-year.
