On April 29, KFDA of South Korea announced an adaptation plan to classify food additives according to their use.
The program includes the classification of food additives into 31 categories based on their use, such as preservatives, antioxidants, sweeteners, etc., and the definition of each use while providing chemical molecular forms, CAS classification numbers, aliases, limits of use, etc. for each additive.
For the past 62 years, Korean food additives have been classified according to the synthetic and natural classification system, which not only leads to the frequent occurrence of misuse without express food additive use, but also brings consumers the misconception that natural additives are safe and synthetic additives are unsafe.
KFDA decided to adopt the adaptation plan in order to eliminate consumer misconceptions about food additives and to make it easier for enterprises to understand the food used by food additives and the limits of their use.
KFDA said it will listen to the views of academics, enterprises, consumer groups in July this year to determine the program, the second half of the Food Hygiene Act to be amended, while the release of food additives benchmarks and specifications of all correction notice.
