Seoul, December 14 (Yonhap News Agency) -- South Korea's Ministry of Marine and Fisheries said on the 14th that South Korea's aquatic food exports achieved this year's annual target of $3 billion ahead of schedule on the 9th of this month, an increase of 15%
over the same period last year ($2.
    61 billion).
According to the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries, the export value of aquatic food this year will exceed 4 trillion won (about 21.
    5 billion yuan)
    for the first time.

At present, Korean aquatic food is sold to 139 countries and regions
    around the world.
By category, nori exports the highest amount, at $620 million, accounting for 70% of the global market
    .
South Korea's seaweed exports reached US$100 million in 2010, and it has been the champion in aquatic food exports since 2019
    .
Since the farming, processing, and distribution of nori are carried out in Korea, the added value of its export is quite high
    .

    Tuna ranked second
    with $580 million in exports.
Mingtai and cod ranked third and fourth, with exports of US$260 million and US$120 million
    , respectively.

This good performance is mainly due to the fact that the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries formulated a strategy to expand aquatic food exports at the beginning of this year, providing all-round support to export enterprises, while ensuring dedicated loading space for aquatic food exports when the epidemic triggered a global logistics crisis, and increasing exports to Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia through Hallyu marketing
    .

The Ministry of Marine and Fisheries also plans to continue to explore new markets such as Europe and South America, support export enterprises facing difficulties due to rising logistics costs, promote the continuous improvement of exports, and focus on cultivating potential varieties such as oysters and abalone, and establishing aquatic food cluster industrial parks to lay the foundation
    for optimizing the industrial structure.

Minister of Marine and Fisheries Zhao Chenghuan said that under the situation that the country's overall export is facing difficulties, the fishery industry has achieved the results
of completing the annual target ahead of schedule through continuous efforts.
