August 26, the International Organization for Applied Agricultural Biotechnology Services (ISAAA) in Beijing announced the global commercialization of genetically modified/genetically modified crops in 2018. It is reported that a total of 70 countries planted or imported GM crops in 2018, this is the world's 23rd consecutive application of GM crops. A total of 191.7 million hectares of GM crops were planted in 26 countries (21 developing and 5 developed countries), an increase of 1.9 million hectares over 2017.
    S. S. Teng, Chairman of the Board of Directors of isAA, said, "While agricultural biotechnology is not the only key technology to improve global food security, it is an important scientific tool in multidisciplinary programmes. Since
1996, GM crop cultivation has increased about 113-fold to a cumulative area of 2.5 billion hectares, proving that GM technology is the fastest growing crop technology in the world. In countries with high annual application rates of GM crops, such as the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and India, the application rate of major crops is close to 100 per cent, indicating that farmers prefer this crop technology to traditional crops.
2018, the market will meet the needs of larger farmers and consumers, and offer a wide variety of genetically modified crops with a variety of vendings. These GM crops include bruising-resistant, brown-resistant, low-acrylamide and late-on-epidemic potatoes; insect-resistant and drought-resistant sugar cane; anti-browning apples; and highly oleic rape and serum seeds.
ISAA report also highlights the following key findings:
In 2018, the top five countries with the largest gm crop areas (the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and India) accounted for 91% of global GM crop cultivation.
of GM soybeans in the world, accounting for 50% of the global GM crop area.
area of GM crops with multiple characteristics continues to increase, accounting for 42% of the global GM crop cultivation area.
79.4 million hectares of GM crops were grown in 10 Latin American countries.
19.13 million hectares of GM crops have been grown in nine countries in Asia and the Pacific.
, Indonesia has developed drought-tolerant sugar cane for the first time through collaboration between the public sector (Jember University) and the private sector (Ajinomoto Ltd.).
kingdom of Swadini (formerly Eswatini), together with South Africa and Sudan, has grown genetically modified crops in Africa and introduced insect-resistant cotton. Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya and Malawi approved the cultivation of insect-resistant cotton, marking the beginning of the cultivation of genetically modified crops in Africa.
continue to grow genetically modified corn in Europe, Spain and Portugal to control European corn cocoons.
, Bt rice, herbicide-resistant cotton, low-phenol cotton, etc. have obtained a number of food, feed and processing approvals.
it is understood that crops approved for cultivation in 2019 include a new generation of herbicide-resistant cotton and soybeans, low-phenol cotton, glyphosate and low ligand, omega-3 rape, and insect-resistant beans.
ISAA is a non-profit organization. The organization shares the benefits of crop biotechnology with stakeholders, particularly farmers in resource-poor developing countries, through knowledge-sharing programmes and the provision of specialized biotechnology applications.
