    Bioengineers at Massachusetts General Hospital have recently developed an advanced hydrogel that promotes wound healing from second-degree burns and dissolves quickly and easily during dressing changes, minimizing pain and trauma
    in patients.


    The findings were published in the journal Bioactive Materials on
    September 27.

    "In collaboration with Tufts University, our team set out to develop a supramolecular hydrogel that dissolves on demand and is quickly removed by doctors, reducing the need for analgesics and opioids, as well as length of hospital stay and expense
    .


    The material, called Supramolecular Mixed Hydrogel (SHH), can be applied directly to the wound and then covered
    with gauze or a protective dressing.


    The unique feature of supramolecular mixed hydrogel is that it can dissolve
    quickly in less than 5 minutes.


    In addition, the protective wound barrier can be assembled in about 15 seconds, which is a much shorter time compared to existing hydrogels

    Another advantage of this groundbreaking burn dressing is its ease of adaptation to the consumer market

    The researchers believe that supramolecular hybrid hydrogels can not only be used as burn wound dressings, but can be used in a wider range of biomedical engineering fields in the future, such as tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and biopreservation
